The College of Cardinals, who gathered in a secret conclave inside the Sistine Chapel, has elected the first North American pope.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who is 69 years old and was born in Chicago, has taken the name Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV is also a naturalized Peruvian citizen.

He is not the first American Pope. He is the first US Pope. Francis was from Argentina (Jorge Bergoglio) and Argentina is in South América, part of the American continent. The US is only one of three countries in North America. I am fed up with the US appropriating the name of America
Please! Let me set this and so many other US-centric headlines straight. There was an American pope who just died. He was from SOUTH AMERICA. This man is from the United States which is just a part of the NORTH AMERICAN land mass. The AMERICAS spread from Alaska all the way down to the tip of Chile, which includes its archipelago.
The US is NOT America!
